| According to Homeric legend, Tangier was founded by Neptune's son, Anteus, who, before beingslain by Hercules, named the city after his wife, Tingo. Later, it passed under Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman control, before being finally falling to the Spanish and Portuguese. In the 17th century, the city
was brought under the British crown as part of Catherine of Braganza's dowry when she married King Charles II. Later, it was joined to the Shareefian Empire before being accorded international status at the turn of this century. It was finally reintegrated into the independent Kingdom of Morocco in 1956. Tangier, with access to 2 oceans, has long been home to world-famous personalities. Its distinct charm stems from its souks (markets), medina (old city), the lovely kasbah (fortified town) on a hill overlooking the sea, and beyond, the "Mountain" dotted with luxurious villas. The modern town boasts fine buildings and a sports stadium. | Outdoor activities include polo, underwater and deepwater fishing in the Straits of Gibraltar, the Atlantic or Mediterranean, yatching, tennis, pigeon shooting and many other sports. Numerous cinemas, cabarets, bars and nightclubs offer a host of night time diversions as well. Local excursions are easily arranged to nearby Tetouan, a town with a unique Spanish flair, the lovely hillside village of Chaouen in the Rif Mountains, historic Larache and the Roman ruins of Lixus, and further afield to the beach resort of Ketama and the holy city of Ouezzane, home to both Muslim and Jewish holy shrines.Tangier is reputed for its mild climate with an average year-round temperature of 57F in winter, and 72F in summer. The kasbah, the Sultan's Palace and garden, the Moroccan Arts Museum, the old American Legation (the oldest American-owned building outside the continental United States,) the famed Forbes Museum, walks through the old town or Petit Socco with its narrow, winding streets, Cap Spartel (the northwesternmost point in Africa,) the Caves of Hercules and beautiful Cap Malabata. |
