| One of Africa's largest ports, Casablanca or Dar el Beida (white House) as it is known in Arabic, is built on the site of an ancient Phoenician stronghold called Anafa. ![]() | Once a small fishing village, Casablanca gained cultural and political importance with the advent of the French protectorate in 1912. Its population now tops 4 million. Casa, as it is called, is Morocco's commercial capital, and recently added the Hassan II Mosque built over the water, and the largest mosque in the world after Mecca's and Medina's to its modern skyline. Most of the kingdom's cultural and commercial activities are concentrated in Casablanca, from art galleries to excellent international restaurants.
